This Essex countryside house was a very small two-up two-down property.  The clients wanted to more than double the size of the accommodation but this met with resistance from the planners who wanted a small ‘in-line subordinate’ extension.  We argued that mediaeval houses of this type were normally extended by the additional of a traditional cross-wing.   The argument was eventually accepted.  The jettied cross-wing with projecting oak joists can be seen here.
